I urge you to join the above group if you HATE being bombarded by commercial radio and insidiously ubiquitous piped pop trash.
Every citizen should have the choice to experience silence and not be assaulted by the loathsome mindless noise of radios and piped audio pollution - whether that be in a shopping mall, doctor's surgery, hospital, restaurant, café, or wherever.Piped "music" or audio pollution violates our individual space, our consciousness. It is used most often to stupify consumers, lull them into a state of false comfort - whereby they become more susceptible to mind control and advertising. But polls conducted worldwide have demonstrated overwhelmingly that it is the majority of people that detest this form of audio excrement. The next step then is that we, the majority, need to make a stand against it. 'Pipedown' and similar sites have come into being because there are people out there who wish to speak out against the omnipresent assault of background shit (aural abuse).
The point is that silence has no value system based on “taste” – it is simply silence; whereas aural abuse (including TV) is based on someone’s personal taste or idea of “good taste” or a “value system” – and it's all subjective. So no matter what is playing, someone is going to hate it or find it exceedingly annoying. And why should we put up with it? So SILENCE is the solution!
Wiping out these brainwashing business practices may be beyond most of us, but there's always some hope that we can make a change - more strategies and resources are needed to combat it, obliterate it. More anti-piped audio pollution groups need to form, unite, and fight aural abuse!!!
"Soon silence will have passed into legend. Man has turned his back on silence. Day after day he invents machines and devices that increase noise and distract humanity from the essence of life, contemplation, meditation. His anxiety subsides. His inhuman void spreads monstrously like a gray vegetation." ~ Jean Arp (16 September 1887 - 7 June 1966)
Opinions and discussions are most welcome!

Strictly speaking, "Muzak" is a system of delivering music to many parts of a building simultaneously, but it has come to stand for a whole genre of music "piped" into businesses, restaurants, shops, hotels, and transport hubs.
The word "Muzak" has been a registered trademark since 1954, when the company was formed. It was also known at the time (and years after) as "elevator music" or "lift music". Well there's nothing elevating or uplifting about today's background audio excrement.

Barenboim hits out at 'sound of Muzak'
By Kathryn Westcott

[edited]
Daniel Barenboim says people don't actively listen to music enough.
Conductor and pianist Daniel Barenboim is to launch a campaign against Muzak - the background music which for many has become the inescapable soundtrack to daily life.
The musical director of the Chicago Symphony is delivering this year's BBC Reith Lectures, the flagship broadcast series now in its 59th year.
In his second lecture, to be broadcast next week, Barenboim argues that too often we hear music over which we have no control and too infrequently do we listen to music of our own choice.
"Active listening is absolutely essential," he says.
He says that Muzak is largely responsible for encouraging people not just to "neglect" the ear but to "repress" it.
"If we are allowed an old term to speak of musical ethics, it is absolutely offensive," he says.

Piped or background music, or "sonic sewage" is a form of brainwashing - the media, and the corporations are using it to lull the masses into stupefied consumers. The dystopias that Dick imagined and explored have some parallels with the technology-based oppression and pseudo-utopian world of marketing and materialism in current society.
PHILIP K. DICK AND THE FAKE HUMANS
[ Dick believed that we all live in a world where “spurious realities are manufactured by the media, by governments, by big corporations, by religious groups, political groups—and the electronic hardware exists by which to deliver these pseudo-worlds right into heads of the reader.” ]

Petition: Against forced music in hospitals
ReplyDeleteBackground (Preamble):
Increasingly, patients in hospital wards, and in hospital and doctor's waiting rooms are being forced to listen, either to other people's choice of music, or to the noise of their televisions.
Any unwanted music becomes a form of noise pollution that can irritate or depress, rather than entertain or divert, people who may already be suffering.
This is born out by a survey of 115 blood donors carried out at Nottingham University Medical School in 1995. It found that playing music made waiting donors more anxious before donating blood, and more depressed after donating, than silence.
If such outpatients (all healthy volunteers) feel like this, patients lying often immobilised in beds may suffer far worse. It is particularly unfair to trample on other people's rights to peace, when they are at their most vulnerable in hospital. Anyone who wants to listen to music or radio can do so easily through headphones.
